2020 is the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims' leaving Plymouth for America and I want this City to be at the heart of the Celebration. I have already met with the Culture secretary and she is backing our plans for this project. I want to use this occasion to help boost our regional economic growth, attracting tourists to Plymouth and bringing more jobs into the City.
I was delighted to have been appointed by the Prime Minister as her Special Representative and Coordinator for the Mayflower Anniversary Commemorations. The role will see me work with our national and international partners to ensure that the UK plays a full and active role in the celebrations. I'm extremely pleased that a Plymouth MP has been given this role as it reaffirms the city's position as the centre of the celebrations as we approach them in 2020.
I will campaign tirelessly to make sure that we take our story to the heart of Government. I look forward to helping many cultural aspects of our city join together to celebrate such a monumental occasion as we continue to celebrate the importance of Plymouth in the story of the Mayflower.
