In 2014, the Government announced that £2.5billion will be invested into Babcock and the Dockyard, securing 4,000 jobs over the next five years. I have already secured 7 of the new Type-26 warships to be based at Devonport and I will continue to campaign for one of them to be named 'HMS Plymouth' so that we can secure Plymouth's Naval heritage for generations to come.
Although the recent announcement that the Ministry of Defence will dispose of Stonehouse Barracks and the Royal Citadel by 2024, I am really pleased that Plymouth will become a 'super garrison' - with Royal Marines from Arbroath, Taunton and Chivener being relocated down to our City. I am pressing the Government to relocate these troops to Bull Point, which is next to RM Tamar and close to the Royal Marines' amphibious vessels. Whilst I was a PPS at the Ministry of Defence, I campaigned from within the department to ensure that Plymouth could be kept at the top of the list when it came to the Government's priorities for the Royal Marines.
I am very keen that our troops have the best possible kit and should be provided with fit-for-purpose accommodation whilst at the same time ensuring that any development of the barracks respects their historic nature and contributes towards Plymouth's social housing needs.
